The film Forbidden Planet (1956) is a famous adaptation of The Tempest which casts the play as science fiction. Prospero the magician becomes the archetypal mad scientist Dr Morbius, stranded on the planet with only his daughter Altaira until the arrival of an expedition team from Earth. Within the scenes of The Tempest, and the historical events narrated by Prospero, we watch him metamorphose from self-absorbed and over-critical to someone coming to terms with his own failings, able to forgive others’ transgressions and relinquish his … Universe. He is a sympathetic character in that he was wronged by his usurping brother, but his absolute power over the other characters and his overwrought speeches make him difficult to like.
